The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly: Seahawks 3 - Raiders 33

Offensive: The Oakland Raiders put up 545 total yards against the Seattle Seahawks with 239 yards coming on the ground.  The rush yards are impressive as the Seahawks are one of the best teams stopping the run.  Darren McFadden had another nice game with 135 total yards from scrimmage.  Darrius Heyward-Bey probably had the best game as a Raider with 105 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Defensive: The defense did a good job of getting after the quarterback with eight sacks.  They also limited Matt Hasselbeck to 160 passing yards and the Seahawks running backs to 47 rushing yards.

The Good: The Raiders won back to back games pretty handily and are starting to look like a team that could challenge the Chiefs for the division lead.  Jason Campbell has created a quarterback controversy between Bruce Gradkowski and himself.  Darren McFadden continued to look good as the premiere back in the run game with another 100-yard game.

The Bad: It's hard to find a lot of bad in a game like this but the two sacks given up should be the focus.  The offensive line has played great but if they hope to make into the playoffs they will need to keep Gradkowski/Campbell upright.

The Ugly: The punt return team has to do a better job of blocking.  The Seahawks punted 9 times and the Raiders only had 6 returns for a total of 29 yards.

What's Next: The Raiders will face the division leading Kansas City Chiefs next week.  If the Raiders win it will close the Chiefs' division lead to one game in front of the Raiders.

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly: Broncos 16 - 49ers 24

Offensive: 49ers quarterback Troy Smith threw for 196 yards with a passer rating of 115.2.  He was limited in the first half but then broke through in the second half and led the 49ers to a win.  Frank Gore had another game where he ran for over 100 yards and Michael Crabtree caught another touchdown pass to give him three for the season.

Defensive: Linebackers Manny Lawson and Patrick Willis both had great games.  Lawson probably had the best game of his career with a sack, forced fumble, and kept getting pressure on Kyle Orton and at one point knocked him out of the game for a play.  Patrick Willis on the other hand looked like the class Willis.  He was all over the field and made eight tackles and made his presence felt.

The Good: The 49ers defense was able to get to Kyle Orton often and recorded four sacks led by Justin Smith's two sacks.  The run defense was stout again in their ability to limit the Broncos running backs to 58 yards on the ground.  The offensive line played really well by not giving up any sacks and looked good in the run game.  Finally, the 49ers may have found a quarterback that could win them games with Troy Smith.  He is fully responsible for winning that game.

The Bad: The offensive playcalling in the first half in which the 49ers only attempted nine passes.  The Broncos played awful in the first half and it was clear they were trying to get acclamated to the time change but the 49ers did not take advantage but instead tried to force the run game.  The game could have been more one-sided if not for the conversative play calling--a staple in the Mike Singletary era.

The Ugly: The 49ers pass defense has been awful all year and was bad again this week.  Kyle Orton threw for 369 yards and Brandon Lloyd tore up the 49ers DB's with 169 receiving yards.  The only good part of the 49ers defensive backs was the interception by Shawntae Spencer to end the Broncos threat in the final minute of the fourth quarter.

What's Next: The 49ers have a bye next week and then will face division rivals St. Louis Rams in San Francisco.

Lineups for World Series: Game 4 - Giants @ Rangers

Oakland: Out - DT John Henderson (foot), WR Chaz Schilens (knee), WR Louis Murphy (chest); Questionable - RB Michael Bennett (hamstring), QB Bruce Gradkowski (shoulder), LB Travis Goethel (back), OLB Thomas Howard (knee), G Robert Gallery (calf), CB Chris Johnson (concussion), TE Zach Miller (foot), WR Nick Miller (ankle), LB Kameron Wimbley (groin)

Oakland: QB Bruce Gradkowski (3rd QB), WR Chaz Schilens, WR Louis Murphy, CB Walter McFadden, RB Michael Bennett, LB Travis Goethel, LB Thomas Howard, DT John Henderson

Looks as if Bruce Gradkowski is making progress but not enough to be the backup quarterback.  Kyle Boller will backup Jason Campbell.  The quarterback position will be key today against the Seahawks who are light at the defensive back position.  If DHB was ever go to have a big game, this will be his chance.

Week 8 NFL Picks

Miami at Cincinnati (-2) The Batman and Robin show has not been as good as advertised.  Carson Palmer has been hurt and not real good this season.   Pick: Dolphins 20-17

Jacksonville at Dallas (-6.5) – With Tony Romo injured Jon Kitna gets the start.  The move to Kitna might force the Cowboys to run the ball but either way the Cowboys can’t be trusted.  Pick: Jaguars 28-27

Washington at Detroit (-2.5) – The Redskins have the league’s worst defense in a statistical sense.  They still win games and will beat the Lions in Staffords first game back for the Lions.  Pick: Redskins 35-21

Buffalo at Kansas City (-8) – The Chiefs are at home and playing the Bills.  Pick: Chiefs 24-21

Green Bay at NY Jets (-6) – The Packers has a good offense but the Jets defense is better.  I expect the Jet’s DBs to stop the Packers and they will be forced to run and we will know how that works out.  Pick: Jets 20-17

Denver at San Francisco (-1) – Both teams are pretty bad.  Troy Smith will try to win his second career game.  Pick: Broncos 20-17

Carolina at St. Louis (-3) – The Rams are better than expected and should light up the Panthers defense. Pick: Rams 24-14

Tennessee at San Diego (-3.5) – Titans travel to San Diego to try and get Jeff Fisher’s first win against the Chargers.  Titans are improving and Chargers are disappointing.  Pick: Titans 24-21

Tampa Bay at Arizona (-3) The Max Hall love affair is over and the Cardinals now realize they don’t have a legit QB.  Pick: Buccaneers 31-24

Minnesota at New England (-5) – Brett Favre may not play and if he does, he shouldn’t.  Patriots at home will get it done. Pick: Patriots 35-24

Seattle at Oakland (-2.5) – The Raiders looked good against the Broncos but the Seahawks are better.  Seattle will show the Raiders that Jason Campbell really is not good.  Pick: Seahawks 24-10

Pittsburgh at New Orleans (Pick 'em) – The Saints are not playing like champions and the Steelers are. Pick: Steelers 35-31

Houston at Indianapolis (-5.5) – Texans beat the Colts once this year but it won’t happen again this year.  Texans have some injuries on the defense and Peyton Manning won’t forget the loss. Pick: Colts 35-21

Denver Broncos @ San Francisco 49ers: Lose-Lose Situation for Mike Singletary

Date: October 31, 2010

Location: Wembley Stadium, London
Records: Broncos (2-5) 49ers (1-6)
Spread: 49ers (-1)

Injuries

Denver: Out - LB Robert Ayers (foot), CB Perrish Cox (concussion), S Darcel McBath (ankle), DL Kevin Vickerson (groin), LB Wesley Woodyard (hamstring); Probable - S Brian Dawkins (knee), CB Andre Goodman (quad), WR Eddie Royal (groin)

San Francisco: Out - QB Alex Smith (shoulder), C Eric Heitmann (neck); Doubtful - CB Tarell Brown (back); Questionable - TE Vernon Davis (ankle), RB Anthony Dixon (hamstring); Probable - LB Ahmad Brooks (knee), CB Nate Clements (ankle), T Adam Snyder (back)

Inactives

Denver: QB Brady Quinn (3rd QB), OLB Robert Ayers, T Chris Clark, CB Perrish Cox, S Darcel McBath, G Eric Olsen, DE Kevin Vickerson, OLB Wesley Woodyard

San Francisco: QB Alex Smith, T Alex Boone, CB Tarell Brown, C Eric Heitmann, WR Jason Hill, LB Keaton Kristick, T Barry Sims, WR Kyle Williams

The 49ers will go for their second win this season today.  If they don't win, which is completely possible, it should be the end for Mike Singletary.  It likely won't because of the lack of coaching experience on Singletary's staff.  No matter what happens this season Singletary is done as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers after this season.

Stephen Curry Out for Sunday's Game Against Los Angeles Lakers

Warriors point guard Stephen Curry did not travel with team to Los Angeles for tomorrow's game against the Lakers.  Curry injured his ankle for the third straight game after injuring it in the third quarter of the game against the Clippers.  The injury happened when he tried to get around a screen of Blake Griffin and stepped on Griffin's foot.  Curry immediately went to the ground and began holding his ankle.

The orginal prognosis was a sprained ankle but Curry and the team has decided for him not to play against the Lakers and with the Warriors next game not until Wednesday hopefully Curry can heal by then.

Head coach, Keith Smart said that Reggie Williams will start in place of Stephen Curry.

World Series Game 3: Giants 2, Rangers 4 - Moreland's Homer Leads the Rangers

The San Francisco Giants could not keep the Texas Rangers bats quiet for long but they did not expect the damage to come from Mitch Moreland, the number 9 hitter.  Moreland hit a three-run shot of Jonathan Sanchez in the second inning that gave the Texas Rangers a 3-0 lead and lead them to a 4-2 victory in Game 3 of the World Series and cut the Giants series lead to 2-1.  Ranger outfielder Josh Hamilton hit a solo homerun in fifth inning for his first World Series homerun and gave the Rangers their fourth run of the game.

The Rangers starting pitcher, Colby Lewis shut down a Giants offense that had scored 20 runs in two games.  Lewis went 7 2/3 innings while giving up only two runs and striking out 6.  The two runs came of solo homeruns from NLCS MVP Cody Ross and Giants leadoff hitter Andres Torres

In the eigth inning, the Giants had a chance to tie the game after Aubrey Huff was hit by Colby Lewis and Buster Posey was up to bat with two outs.  Posey grounded out to shortstop Elvis Andrus and that ended the threat.  That was the last offensive threat by the Giants because in the ninth innings Ron Washington brought in Neftali Perez to save the game and he did so in an emphatic way.  He struck out both Pat Burrell and Juan Uribe and got Cody Ross to fly out to deep right field.

Speaking of Pat Burrell, who is slowly becoming this World Series' version of Reggie Sanders.  I'm sure we all remember Sanders in the 2002 postseason when he hit a whopping .182 with 18 strikeouts.  Well Burrell is hitting .176 in this postseason with 15 strikeouts.  Like I said, well on his way.  Look, its hard to forget what Burrell has been to this team this year and no doubt the Giants would not still be here without him but he cannot continue to kill rally's like he is doing.  Today, he was 0 for 4 with four strikeouts and two of the four at-bats he was in an RBI situation and could not even make contact with the ball.  He is swinging at balls out of the strike zone and making it easy for the pitchers to get out of jams.

I don't expect to see Bruce Bochy sit him tomorrow but I do expect him to be moved down in the lineup.  It wouldn't be the worse thing to move up Cody Ross to the fifth spot and put Burrell in the sixth hole.

Bruce Bochy's full post-game transcript is after the jump:

Broncos-49ers: Brian Westbrook & Anthony Dixon To Get More Touches?

When the San Francisco 49ers backup running back Glen Coffee retired in the middle of training camp he left the 49ers with no real options at running back.  The 49ers downplayed the need to get a backup since they run a one-back system with Frank Gore being the lead dog and had drafted Anthony Dixon out of Mississippi State in the 2010 draft.  With all that said they went and signed former Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook to backup Gore.

The idea was that Westbrook could spell Gore and give the 49ers offense a different type of running back.  Having Westbrook was supposed to also lighten the load for Gore with hopes that he could actually make it through an entire season without missing a game.  Gore has a history on not making it through an entire season--the last time he played in all 16 games was in 2006.

So far the plan to play both Westbrook and Gore has not worked.  Gore has had 172 touches in seven games compared to Westbrook's 6 touches.  Whether Westbrook's lack of action is related to the 49ers lack of creativity to get him on the field or another reason its hard to say but it is clearly a mistake by the 49ers coaches to not have him more involved.

But that's all suppose to change this week.  Mike Singletary said in his media session on Friday that he expects to see more of Anthony Dixon and Brian Westbrook.

On whether you expect to see more of RB Brian Westbrook and RB Anthony Dixon this weekend:
“It’s possible.”

On whether that is a priority for you:
“It is a priority, yes it is.”
But we heard that tune before and the result has been six touches by Brian Westbrook and four touches by Anthony Dixon in seven regular season games.

It would seem like a good idea for Westbrook to get some touches this week after what Darren McFadden and the Oakland Raiders was able to do against the Denver Broncos last week.  Most of their running plays were stretch plays to the outside and off-tackle runs which are the type of runs that are better suited for Westbrook's running style compared to Gore's.  Full transcript after the jump.

Lineups for World Series: Game 3 - Giants @ Rangers

-As reported yesterday Pablo Sandoval will DH for this game.  Bruce Bochy said that if the Panda looks good today then he will likely be DH tomorrow as well.

-Ron Washington was asked if Cliff Lee would be the starter in Game 4.  He was not committal either way.  It sounds like that if the Giants win then Lee would pitch tomorrow and if the Rangers win, then it would be Tommy Hunter.

The lineups are after the jump:

World Series Game 3: Pablo Sandoval to DH

Bruce Bochy confirmed that third baseman Pablo Sandoval would be the DH for Game 3 of the World Series against the Texas Rangers.  So far the San Francisco Giants have a 2-0 lead against the Rangers are will play Game 3 tomorrow.

Pablo Sandoval who had a breakout year last year while hitting .330 has struggled this season with his offensive game and his defense.  Most speculate that his increased weight has a lot to do with his struggles this season.  With all that said, he has the potential to be one of the best offensive players on the team if his is hot.

It's a pretty good move by Bruce Bochy, who has been impressive all postseason with the success of all the moves he has made.  If this move works out as good as the others, then it is likely you see the Giants with a series lead of 3-0.

NFL Injury Report: Seahawks-Raiders (Friday)

NFL Injury Report: Broncos-49ers (Friday)

Offensive Coordinator Mike Johnson is not familiar with the San Francisco 49ers new starting quarterback Troy Smith even though he was a coach on the Baltimore Ravens when Smith played in Baltimore.  At that time Johnson was the wide receivers coach.  With Johnson not sure how to best use Smith, he is considering a move from the coaches box upstairs to the sideline according to Matt Maiocco.

Expect to see less of Frank Gore this week and more of Brian Westbrook and Anthony Dixon according to Mike Singletary.  Keep in mind that we have heard this song and dance before and it is about as old as the "just watch and you'll see" response from Singletary.

NFL Injury Report: Seahawks-Raiders (Thursday)

I missed yesterday's report for both the Raiders and the 49ers in large part to being at the Giants game and getting home to late to even post it.  So here's Thursday's report with Friday's close to follow.

The Raiders game will be blacked out again for the 11th consecutive time.  It has to make you wonder if Al Davis will start to consider a joint stadium with the San Francisco 49ers.  I have to believe that if the Raiders had better diggs that more fans would come.

NFL Injury Report: Broncos-49ers (Wednesday)

For the first time in his San Francisco 49ers career, Troy Smith got the first team reps at quarterback.  He is set to start on Sunday against the Denver Broncos for the third time in his career.  His two previous starts were when he was with the Baltimore Ravens and he won one and lost one.

Other than Alex Smith and Eric Heitmann being out, I would expect everyone else to play.  It will be more telling based on tomorrow's practice how serious some of the other injuries are.  The only one that I am really concerned about is the Anthony Dixon injury but it may be a good thing--we may get to see more Brian Westbrook.

Denver

Did Not Participate: LB Robert Ayers (foot), CB Perrish Cox (concussion), S Darcel McBath (ankle), WR Eddie Royal (groin), DE Kevin Vickerson (groin), LB Wesley Woodyard (hamstring)
Full Participation: S Brian Dawkins (knee), CB Andre' Goodman (quad)

Broncos-49ers: Troy Smith Named Starting QB

Big news of the day is that quarterback Troy Smith will start for the San Francisco 49ers against the Denver Broncos. Alex Smith is expected to be out for about 2-3 weeks with an injured shoulder and Troy Smith is expected to be the quarterback. Troy Smith leapfrogged David Carr who was listed as the #2 quarterback last week but after an ineffective performance in the second half of last Sunday's game Mike Singletary decided that Troy Smith "gives the team the best chance to win."

Not that I'm a huge fan of David Carr's but it's a bit unfair to David Carr to not give him an opportunity. Watching the game, I don't think he was given the opportunity to make plays. At that point of the game, Singletary had gone conservative and unfortunately for David Carr it cost him a chance to make some plays.

Troy Smith is not the answer for the 49ers, and just in case your asking neither is Nate Davis. But, he has the upside that the other quarterbacks, including Alex Smith, doesn't have. If the 49ers weren't so hard-headed about their chance to make it to the playoffs then they may play Davis. Unfortunately, they are not realists and for some god awful reason think they can actually make the playoffs.

Don't expect to see anything but a lot of running the ball up the middle. I'm sure that Singletary saw what the Raiders did running against the Broncos defense on the ground and thinks they will be able to do the same. The difference, the Oakland Raiders have creativity in their offense.

I've posted both the transcript for the Mike Singletary and Troy Smith media sessions after the jump.

Seahawks-Raiders: Louis Murphy has Bruised Lung

According to ProFootballTalk, Louis Murphy will be out for Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks.  The Oakland Raiders receiver left the 59-14 rout of the Denver Broncos after colliding with fullback Marcel Reece while going for a catch along the sideline.

ProFootballTalk did not list an official source so we likely won't have an official word until the Raiders release their injury report.

Former 49er, Thomas Clayton Claimed by Cleveland Browns

In the past, San Francisco 49ers fans have been known to fall in love with players who during the pre-season look good against second and third string teams.  So much so that they start to think that player is better than the current proven starter.  The current love affair is with quarterback Nate Davis whom has not impressed the head coach but has a big fan in offensive coordinator Mike Johnson.

Another former favorite, running back Thomas Clayton, may finally get to show his stuff in the regular season.  The Cleveland Browns have claimed Clayton off waivers from the New England Patriots after waiving for six-round pick James Davis.

Clayton was originally drafted by the 49ers in the sixth-round of the 2007 had a few impressive pre-seasons with the 49ers but was never able to get past the practice squad.  After getting injured in training camp last year he has been bouncing on and off of the Patriots' roster.

Raiders-Broncos: Tom Cable Day After Press-Conference

After beating the Denver Broncos pretty bad yesterday the Oakland Raiders players got their first victory Monday.

It looks like the injury report will be filled up again this week for the Raiders as they did not get out of the game without some players injured.  As usual we will have those updates posted tomorrow.

Right now Raider nation is sitting high on Darren McFadden and his incredible game.  I've heard some say he should be named the league MVP which is a bit overzealous.  Fans need to remember that he ran over the one of the worst run defenses (#15) in the league.  I am really looking forward to see what happens this week against the Seattle Seahawks.  If McFadden can have a huge game against them, I think we may finally see him turn into an elite back.  Currently, the Seahawks are rated #2 against the run on defense.

The entire Tom Cable press conference transcript is after the jump:

49ers-Panthers: Mike Singletary Day After Press-Conference

No regular press-conference today for Mike Singletary due to the time difference and since the Bay Area media hadn't made it out to London yet, Singletary sat down with the London media.  He probably preferred it that way.

A lot of questions about playing in London and not a lot of questions about his playoff guarantee or whether he would promote Nate Davis from the practice squad.  It's my guess that we will hear about the severity of Alex Smith's injury tomorrow but I would venture to say that he is out this game and maybe a couple of weeks after that.

Head Coach Mike Singletary
Monday Press Conference (London) - October 25, 2010

On his thoughts about playing in London:
"I think it's great. For us, it's a nice chance to kind of get away, regroup and rethink. I think it came at a good time."

On whether he's worried about the travel right after the game having an impact on the players:
"No, not at all. I think the fact that we came over right after the game, the guys will have a chance this week to kind of get caught up, relax a bit and get used to the environment. I think it will be a plus for us."

On the NFL having teams playing internationally and whether it is a bonus to the league or a disruption to the schedule:
"It depends on the way you look at it. I think for us, it really works to be a bonus for us. I think it really gives us a chance to kind of get away from the hustle and bustle of the NFL. To come over here and think through some things, look at maybe some changes you need to make, it gives you a chance to slow down the pace a bit. Like I said, the environment here is a great environment for us."

On whether QB Alex Smith will play this weekend:
"As of right now, we have to get the X-Rays and see what the doctors are thinking at that time and get a feel for it."

On what his chances are:
"I'm not a doctor, so we'll have to wait and see."

On whether Smith is at the doctor right now:
"No."

On having lost close games and what needs to be done to overcome those close losses:
"We're going to figure it out this week. It's important for us to continue to try and put the pieces in place that give us the chance to get over the edge. You hate to be at this particular time trying to figure it out, but we are in the first half of the season still, so we still have a chance to have a good season and accomplish some of the goals that we wanted to accomplish at the beginning of the season. On one hand, you look at close games and you say you're not that far away. On the other hand, you look at the record and it's just not very exciting right now. So, you're at that place where we have to get over that edge, we have to get over that hump, to get where we need to be. I think this week gives us a great opportunity to take a step back, smell the roses a bit and put the pieces in place that we need to put in place to get there."

On whether it is a mental thing to win close games:
"I think for us, we're still maturing. I want our guys to mature faster. I want us to get there yesterday. I feel that this week will be a pivotal week for us. I'm excited to see how we respond on Sunday to some of the changes we'll make this week to try and get better."

On what he expects this Sunday at Wembley Stadium:
"Excitement. I think football is a great game. We're playing in a great atmosphere and hopefully they really get into it. So, it should be very exciting."

On what went wrong against the Panthers:
"Too many big plays. We weren't detailed enough in our coverages. We had some mix-ups on the offensive line. A few guys got hurt, so the continuity wasn't there. I guess to sum it up, too many mistakes to overcome."

On whether it is an advantage financially for the NFL to play games internationally:
"I'm not sure, in terms of the financial gain one way or the other. I think more than anything, it's the exposure. I think the NFL is a tremendous game. I think having a game here really gives the NFL a lot of exposure. I think it gives the people here - it's a two-way street, the fans here have a chance to see the game. In what you call ‘futbol,' I think there are some similarities. The fans could get very excited about it and want more of it. We're hoping that is the case."

On the feeling of having a franchise in London:
"It would depend on the team. That would be really interesting. It could be a good thing. It could be dependent on if the team is young. It depends on if it's a mature team, if it's a young team. I think if you had a mature team here, it could possibly work, and work to their advantage. I'm not trying to sell you on it, but I do believe it would have to be a veteran team, it couldn't be a young team."

On thinking back to his playing days, and whether this could be a disruption to play internationally:
"As a player, I didn't really care. I didn't care where we played. We showed up, let's play. We can play in the street, play in the park, I didn't really care. It really didn't matter to me."

On whether the players are embracing the scenery and atmosphere:
"I think so. I think coaches and players alike. This has really come at a great time for us. I think we're going to take full advantage of it and get the things done that we need to get done to get on track Sunday, and head into the bye week and get ready for the rest of the season."

On the decision to travel to London early in the week rather than at the end of the week:
"I always believe that we want to give the guys a chance to get acclimated. If you're going to come for just a couple of days - we know it's a business trip and we know that we're coming here to win a football game, but at the same time, we have a younger football team. I wanted our guys to be able to come and get a taste of the culture, and at the same time, get a feel for the environment. The weather and the whole nine yards, and just be settled by the time the game starts. I think it was a great decision."

Pitching Rotations Set for the World Series

The pitching rotation for the San Francisco Giants has been set and there is a small change.  Manager Bruce Bochy informed the media that Tim Lincecum will be the Game 1 starter. Lincecum is set to face the Texas Rangers ace, Cliff Lee.

For Game 2, Bochy made a change and has moved up Matt Cain. When Cain pitches on Thursday he will have had 8 days rest. Jonathan Sanchez and Madison Bumgarner will round out the rotation.

Assuming there are no changes in the rotation Lincecum would pitch Game 5, Cain would go Game 6, and Sanchez would pitch the final game if necessary.

Ron Washington also released his pitching rotation today and as expected Cliff Lee will start the first game, followed in order by C.J. Wilson, Colby Lewis and Tommy Hunter.

Washington also said that Vladimir Guerrero would start Game 1 in right field and said it is possibly that he could play both games in the outfield.  Guerrero is the Texas Rangers' regular designated hitter and is now considered a defensive liability.  This should be interesting to see him try to manage right field at AT&T Park.

49ers Owners Unhappy with Coaching

Mike Singletary Head coach Mike Singletary of the San Francisco 49ers watches on against the Carolina Panthers during their game at Bank of America Stadium on October 24, 2010 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

No real surprise here but it seems that both John and Jed York are less than thrilled with the coaching job being done according to Matt Maiocco.  The interesting thing is that bad coaching never seemed to bother them before.  After all they did hire Dennis Erickson and Mike Nolan.

It is unlikely the 49ers would fire Mike Singletary before the end of the year.  The main reason that is the 49ers do not have a good replacement on the coaching staff.  Usually, when a team fires a head coach they promote a coordinator but in the 49ers case neither coordinator has enough experience to make that change.  The offensive coordinator, Mike Johnson, has only been a coordinator for three weeks and Greg Manusky has been a coordinator for a few years but he needs to focus on the defense.

If the Yorks decided to fire Singletary it would be after the London game again I would expect offensive line coach Mike Solari or wide receivers coach Jerry Sullivan would be promoted.  Both guys have a lot of experience in the league and have been around enough to understand the job.

New Warriors Ownership To Take Over In a Week

Opening night is set to kick off on Wednesday for the Golden State Warriors and soon their new owner will be running the ship.  David Stern, the NBA commissioner, said that Joe Lacob would officially own the Warriors within the next week.

It is unsure whether they would be the new owners by opening night but either way, the Chris Cohan era is only days away from ending.

Although Joe Lacob and Peter Guber have not officially the owners yet, their stamp is currently on this team.  They were involved in the firing of Don Nelson and the additions of David Lee and Jeremy Lin among others.

Still no word who will make up the ownership group.

NLCS Game 6: Giants 3, Phillies 2 - GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!!!!

The San Francisco Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 6 of the NLCS to give them the series win and punch their ticket to the World Series.  This will be the first time that the Giants have made it since 2002 when they played the Anaheim Angels.

The game was the epitome of Giants baseball all season, torture and the great job that Bruce Bochy has been doing managing the team.

Bochy's probably did his best managing job in Game 6 when he made five visits to the mound to change pitchers and make double-switches.

Bochy started by pulling Jonathan Sanchez after just 2 innings of work and then went to the bullpen.  The rest of the game became a congo line of pitchers; both starting and relievers.

Jeremy Affeldt was the first to come in and he had to start with two hitters already on base.  He managed to get out of that jam and he ended pitching two flawless innings and giving up zero hits.  The congo line continued as Bochy brought in Madison Bumgarner, Javier Lopez, Tim Lincecum, and ended with Brian Wilson.  And of course, Wilson saved the game in his normal fashion, with men on base.

The Giants have been the underdog all post-season and it appears that the trend will continue.  By all indications, the Giants are the underdogs and the Rangers are expected to beat the Giants, if you ask the "experts."  This is just fine with the players and the fans because unlike the rest of the entire nation they have watched them all season and they know what they have in this team.  A bunch of misfits who like to win games when they are close.

49ers-Panthers: Mike Singletary Post-Game Press Conference - Singletary Always Good for a Laugh

Matt Maiocco asked the best question of the entire press game conferece.  He asked Singletary if he ever thought about the fact that since they keep losing to bad teams that it is possible they are not that good.  No surprise but Singletary doesn't think that's possible.

Another hilarous moment came when one of the media members asked him that is Smith couldn't go then would David Carr be the starter.  His answer of course was:
"I don't know, going to have to take a look at the film."
That answer is Singletary's default answer.  It basically means I don't have no clue, and I have to talk to people who actually understand how to coach football.

One more quote that I wanted to share before I post the video.  When asked if the 49ers can make the playoffs, Singletary of course said:

"....I still believe we can go the playoffs, I still believe we can get those things done, we just need to get the right things in place and go from there."
The entire video is after the jump:

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly: 49ers 20 - Panthers 23

Offensive: For the fourth week in a row the 49ers have had an excellent opening drive.  In the first drive, the 49ers marched down the field 74 yards in four plays and scored a touchdown.  The biggest play was on a 53-yard pass to Vernon Davis.

Defensive: Nate Clements looked good today with 8 tackles, one forced fumble, and a sack but the defensive hero was Ray McDonald who picked off Matt Moore and ran it back 31 yards for a touchdown.

The Good: The 49ers defense was able to shutdown both the Panthers running backs and only allowed 76 yards rushing.  This was a concern especially with the speedier DeAngelo Williams

The Bad: As much as fans and media types know that Alex Smith is not the future at quarterback for the 49ers, he is still the best quarterback on the team.  Without Smith, expect to see even more run plays because Mike Singletary has no confidence in any of the other quarterbacks.

The Ugly: The playcalling by Mike Johnson after the 49ers got the lead in the second half.  Instead of trying to win the game, they offensive strategy seemed to be to not lose the game and hope the defense can stop the Panthers.  To be fair, this is likely more of Mike Singeltary's fault then Mike Johnson.

What's Next: The 49ers get on a plane to fly to London and will play Sunday against the Denver Broncos.  If Alex Smith can't go then the 49ers will have a hard time beating the Broncos if they depend on the defense to win the game.

49ers-Panthers: Alex Smith Injures Shoulder

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith left the field in the first offensive series in the second half.  The injury came on a sack by Carolina Panthers defensive lineman Charles Johnson.  Johnson beat rookie offensive lineman Anthony Davis and got a free hit on Smith who never saw Johnson coming.

Smith walked off the field with the 49ers trainers to go get x-rays which showed nothing serious but he did not return to the field.  Preliminary reports is that it is a sprained left shoulder.  David Carr came in for Alex Smith and remained in for the rest of the game.  He threw for 67 yards and one interception during that time.

No word yet on how long Smith will be out or if he will be able to play next week.  Right now the 49ers are on their way to London for next week's game against the Denver Broncos.  Smith did say that he will have an MRI in London this week.

Week 7 NFL Picks

Cincinnati at Atlanta (-3 ½) – Falcons are the best team in the NFC South and are hard to beat at home.  Expect them to run the ball alot on the Bengals. Pick: Falcons 20-14

Washington at Chicago (-3) – The Bears are at home but the offensive line is in shambles, Redskins will take advantage. Pick: Redskins 24-21

St. Louis at Tampa Bay (-3) – Sam Bradford has been impressive for a rookie but without a legit #1 wide receiver he has had trouble. Pick: Buccaneers 28-14

San Francisco (-3) at Carolina – 49ers are riding high after their first win, but they face a tough run team and alot of speed on offense which has given them trouble. Pick: Panthers 17-14

Buffalo at Baltimore (-13) – The Bills may not win a game all season. Pick: Ravens 41-14

Philadelphia at Tennessee (-3) – Vince Young is probably not playing for the Titans, and no DeSean Jackson for the Eagles.  Without Young, Titans are easier to defend.  Pick: Eagles 28-27

Jacksonville at Kansas City (-5 ½) – No David Garrard for the Jaguars and MJD will go against a tough run defense. Pick: Chiefs 35-14

Pittsburgh (-3) at Miami – Steelers have Big Ben back and their defense is one of the best.  Miami got a nice win last week in Green Bay but don't have a chance here. Pick: Steelers 24-17

Cleveland at New Orleans (-13) – Colt McCoy starts his second game in a row.  He looked good last week and should have a better week against the Saints.  Browns will keep it close. Pick: Saints 35-24

Arizona at Seattle (-5 ½) – The Seahawks are getting better and it is tough to win on the road.  New RB Marshawn Lynch will have a big game against Arizona. Pick: Seahawks 38-27

New England at San Diego (-3) – The Patriots are coming off a huge win and a need to figure out their pass offense.  The Chargers are not that good against the pass. Pick: Patriots 27-24

Oakland at Denver (-8) – The Raiders best quarterback is not playing so it doesn't matter who starts, they will lose.  Pick: Broncos 27-10

Minnesota at Green Bay (-2 ½) – Packers have a lot of injuries and are seriously slumping, while the Vikings are going the other way. Pick: Vikings 35-34

NY Giants at Dallas (-3) – Dallas is slowly imploding and the Giants defense has been impressive.  Romo will get beat up a lot this game. Pick: Giants 24-17

Carolina: QB Tony Pike (3rd QB), WR Devin Thomas, WR Armanti Edwards, OT Jeff Otah, LB Jamar Williams, CB C.J. Wilson, DT Andre Neblett, RB Tyrell Sutton

The 49ers go for their first road win of the season.  I look at it this way, they could either win and gain some much needed confidence or if they lose the season is over.  There is no way that I seem them losing this guy and winning next week in London.

On the Panthers, side they got back their biggest weapon, Steve Smith, and he is going to cause a lot of problems for the 49ers on defense along with DeAngelo Williams, who I expect to have a huge day.

VIDEO: Official "F**k Yeah" Video

We all now that Tim Lincecum dropped the f-bomb on the air twice, both times after the San Francisco Giants have clinched a game.  Now there is an official video in honor of his might feat.  You can watch the un-official video here.

And now for the official video:

NFL Injury Report: Raiders-Broncos (Final Report)

Barring any setbacks between now and Sunday, Jason Campbell will start for the Oakland Raiders.  Although, he is listed as questionable he was able to participate a bit more and will likely get the start again with Bruce Gradkowski out.  Gradkowski is also starting to get better and is also listed as questionable but it is unlikely he will make it past the third quarterback label.

On the other hand, it seems all but sure that running back Darren McFadden will be active and play in this game.  However, he no longer will be the feature back; he is expected to be in a permanent time share with Michael Bush.

The Denver Broncos report is out and Eddie Royal seems to be the big question.  He practice a "light" amount today and will be a game-time decision.  Champ Bailey is expected to play this week which will make Jason Campbell have a harder time passing the ball.  If you couldn't pass against the San Francisco 49ers DB's, you're going to have trouble against the Broncos' Champ Bailey

NFL Injury Report: 49ers-Panthers (Final Report)

Final injury reports are out and 49ers cornerback Nate Clements is the big name on the 49ers injury report.  With him being listed as questionable and not practicing much all week, all indications are that he will not start.  If he does not make the start, veteran corner Will James will start in his place.

James, who was signed in the offseason to shore up the corner spot has only played recently as he was injured in training camp and through the first couple of games.  He leapfrogged Tarell Brown and took over his spot as the nickel corner.

For the Panthers, Steve Smith is listed as probable and will likely play this Sunday.  His speed may be an issue for the 49ers defense but the larger issue is the running backs, especially DeAngelo Williams.  The last time the 49ers faced a running back that was a speed back was in Kansas City and as we all remember that did not end well.  In that game the Chiefs "speed" running back, Jamaal Charles ran for 97 yards and had 57 yards receiving.

San Francisco

NFL Safety Video Released

In light of the recent injury issues in the NFL, the NFL has released a safety video that is being shown to 32 NFL teams.  The idea behind the video is to show how and how not to legally hit a player under the new rule.

After watching the 4 minute video and seeing the examples it amazes me how many players do not properly know how to tackle.  Most players, for some reason, lower their heads and use their helmets as a weapon.  James Harrison, who has complained about these recent rules, did it twice in the video.  Apparenlty, he doesn't realize that when you tackle like that you could have permanent neck damage and possibly break it as you put a lot of pressure on your spine and neck.  But that's okay, because he is just out to hurt people.

Coordinator's Corner: San Francisco 49ers' OC Mike Johnson on Frank Gore

Fans have been clamoring to get Mike Johnson to use running back Brian Westbrook in the offense more and spell Frank Gore.  Some believe that Gore needs a break to be more effective and others question whether the offense would do better with more of a two back system like the rest of the NFL uses.  Mike Johnson talked today why they use Gore so much and keyed in on Gore being so great at blitz pickups and that is somewhere that Westbrook may not be as good.

On the importance of blitz pickup and whether that is because teams are blitzing more up the middle these days and whether that is the running backs job to step up and take care of that:
Not necessarily, you have base blitzes where they are bringing certain things, and then you have nickel blitzes on third down where they are playing odd-fronts. Where they are playing three down linemen schemes with a lot of walk around backers and safeties coming from different edges and you have to make sure that you’re sound in those areas. In the way we design our blitz pickup and blitz protection schemes, the back is a very important part of that, and [RB] Frank Gore is as solid of a back as I have ever been around in handling all of the necessary adjustments. He is a guy that can cover up a lot of other deficiencies that we may have because of his football intellect and how smart he is as a football player in those different areas. So, it’s a comfort zone for us coaches as well, but we do have to find ways to make sure that we get him some rest.”

On how long it takes to learn the 49ers blitz pickup package specifically since RB Brian Westbrook is such an accomplished player:
“Well, we do more from that than most, and our quarterback redirects protections. We do more at the line of scrimmage with our quarterback in redirecting protections and making calls than any other team that I have been around. So I think he’s getting close, I think he’s starting to get comfortable now, and as the season goes on I think you’ll see him more in those areas.”
Mike Johnson did talk about giving Frank Gore a breather which would likely allow either Brian Westbrook or Anthony Dixon to get more involved in the offense.

On whether you need to look at taking some of the load off of RB Frank Gore so that he is just as strong at the end of the season as he is now:
“Yeah, I mean you do need to take some of that wear and tear off of him, but you know Frank Gore. Frank Gore doesn’t like to come out of the game, he’s a warrior, he likes to go, and we have to make sure that as a staff we are giving that load to other people in making sure that we try to keep him fresh, but the one thing about Frank Gore, when he’s touching the ball I think we’re winning, or we are going to win. I think he’s a guy that can do a lot of different things. He’s good in the running game, he’s good in the pass game, and he’s good on third down. He’s good in the screen game, I mean he’s good in all of those areas and we’d like to give him touches, but we have to use our other backs though and take some of that load off of him because he is in great shape, but as the course of the season goes on, it may wear him down, so we are very mindful of that and there will be a plan going forward that we make sure we use other people to make sure that he’s not taking as many of those snaps.”

NFL Injury Report: Raiders-Broncos (Thursday)

As the week goes on it looks more and more like the Oakland Raiders will start their third different quarterback this season.  It appears that Bruce Gradkowski is not even in the discussion to play this Sunday as he has been unable to pass the ball with any comfort level.  It's a two-horse race between Jason Campbell and Kyle Boller to start this weekend at quarterback and Campbell said if the game was today it would be Boller.

The good news is that Darren McFadden practiced for the second day in a row and with that it is likely that he will be available for Sunday's game.

NFL Injury Report: 49ers-Panthers (Thursday)

San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator was asked about the possibility of San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman being released and his thoughts of him as a player.  Although, he didn't say that the 49ers were looking to sign him, he didn't say they weren't and in fact he's a big fan of Merriman's.
"When I had him four years ago, Shawnie was a great football player.  I love everything about him. He's a true football player."
Last week, Adam Schefter of ESPN said that the 49ers had interest in claiming Merriman off of the waiver wire and since they have such a bad win-loss record it is likely that they would win the claim.

NLCS: Giants Beat Phillies in Bottom of 9th, Take 3-1 Series Lead

And all they need is one more.

That is one more win and the San Francisco Giants will have won the pennant and will be on their way to the World Series for the first time since 2002.

The San Francisco Giants have a 3-1 series lead in the NLCS over the Philadelphia Phillies and have a chance to close it out tonight with a win.

The Giants will send their ace Tim Lincecum on the mound to face the Phillies ace, Roy Halladay.

But that's tonight, and we should talk about last night. But where do we start? It’s has to start with Bruce Bochy. Bochy, has been making all the right moves all post-season and even when they are questionable or unconventional they are working. The key example is his decision to start Pablo Sandoval yesterday and give Uribe the day off.

Sandoval who has been a huge disappointment all year might have redeemed himself last night and yes, Panda hats are back in. The Giants saw a completely different Sandoval last night, that was not the impatient Sandoval who swung and pitches in the dirt and five feet over his head. That was 2009-Sandoval, who hit .330. In the bottom of the 6th, Sandoval came up with Pat Burrell and Cody Ross on base. He hit a two-run double into the left-center gap and gave the Giants back the lead.

Sandoval wasn’t the only hero; we can’t forget Brian Sabean’s best acquisition, Buster Posey.  Posey was great tonight and showed some of his old shortstop skills in the fifth inning. Shane Victorino hit a single up the middle to Aaron Rowand who came up throwing to throw out Carlos Ruiz at home.  The ball came in low and bounced just in front of home plate and Posey picked it out of the ground, just like a shortstop would on a throw from a catcher on a steal, and tagged out Ruiz.

But, that wasn't Posey's only contribution.  He brought his stick to the game also.  Prior to Wednesday’s game he had been in a small slump in this series with just one hit in 12 at-bats but that all changed last night. Posey broke a Giants rookie record by getting four hits in one game in which he saved the best for last. In the bottom of the 9th inning, with Aubrey Huff on first, he hit a single to right field off of Roy Oswalt that allowed Huff to get to third.

That brought up Juan Uribe. Uribe who has been dealing with a wrist injury has been definitely struggling. Manager Bruce Bochy, decided to bring Uribe in on a double switch in the top of the ninth inning and it was Uribe’s turn to become the hero. In the top of the ninth, he made an incredible play to throw out Ross Gload. Then in the bottom of the ninth, it was his chance on offense.

With a 1-2 count against Roy Oswalt, Uribe hit a ball in the air to Ben Francisco. Immediately, the “jazz hands” came out like he just hit a walk-off homerun. But it was a routine can of corn that allowed Huff to tag up and score from third and the Giants won.

As the Giants so often say, “there’s magic inside.”
