49ers make roster moves, sign S C.J. Spillman

The San Francisco 49ers claimed safety C.J. Spillman off waivers from the San Diego Chargers. Spillman was cut by the Chargers earlier this week after playing five games this season with the team.

To make room for Spillman the 49ers waived CB Tramaine Brock. If he clears waivers then the 49ers will likely sign him to the practice squad. In order to sign Brock, the 49ers waived FB Jehuu Caulcrick.

Spillman (6-0, 199), was signed by the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2009. He played in five games as a rookie (1 start), totaling seven tackles.

Born in Louisville, KY, Spillman graduated from Marshall University where he was a two-time second-team All-Conference USA honoree, totaling 319 career tackles and three interceptions.

Raiders finalize cuts, 53 man roster

Update: The Raiders have cut one more player to get their roster down to 53, defensive back Stevie Brown.

Unlike the rest of the teams the Raiders did not make it easy to find their roster cuts.  After some research, here is the cut players.

Big news in the NFC West today

Some big moves are being made in the NFC West as the roster cutdown to 53 gets near.

• The Seattle Seahawks have released wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh after signing him to a five-year deal last year.
• The St. Louis Rams have jumped back into the Vincent Jackson chase to try and find a replacement for Donnie Avery who is out for the season.
• St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo has named Sam Bradford the starting QB for the Rams.
• Arizona Cardinals have released Matt Leinart which now leaves them with Derek Anderson as the starting QB.

Roster cuts: 49ers cut five

Roster cutdown day is among us with teams needing to get their roster down to 53 players by tomorrow.  Most of the moves that are made are pretty obvious but then there are always those surprise moves. 

The 49ers made one of those surprise moves today, the 49ers cut special-teams captain Michael Robinson.  Robinson was drafted in the 4th round of the 2006 NFL draft by former coach Mike Nolan.  When he was drafted it was a questionable move to take the former quarterback but Robinson became a great special-teams leader.

The 49ers also cut wide receiver Jason Hill, a local kid from San Francisco, veteran cornerback Karl Paymah, and fullbacks Brit Miller and Jehuu Caulcrick.

Raiders cut four--roster at 76, Campbell back at practice

With roster cuts looming the Raiders made some moves to get down close to the roster limit of 75.  They waived four players; TE Tony Stewart, WR Paul Hubbard, G Allen Smith, and FB Chane Moline.

This leaves them with 76 players so one more cut will happen before the deadline of Tuesday.

One day after Tom Cable made it seem like Campbell's injury was more serious, well Campbell was back at practice throwing.  It is still doubtful that he will play in the final pre-season game but with the ways injury news is back and forth with the Raiders it is possible he could play.

49ers cut three before Tuesday's deadline, no cuts yet for the Raiders

And the roster cuts have begun.  With cutdown day looming on Tuesday where teams have to get to 75 players the 49ers already made their moves.  Today they waived receiver Bakari Grant and cornerback Patrick Stoudamire.  They also waived injured linebacker Brandon Long.

The Raiders have not announced any cuts yet.

The next cutdown day will be Sep. 4th when teams have to get to 53 players.
